"We never know the good we have 'till constant friends depart, and leave us with half a life, and half a heart."
The last half of the 19th century saw both coasts of the U.S. become central to commerce. Thousands of ships left from and arrived at coastal ports. The most famous of these ports was New Bedford - the home port of a great many deepwater captains. These captains had to leave their wives and families for long periods of time. A New Bedford scimshaw pendant became the symbol of virtuous wives waiting for their husbands to arrive safely.
We designed our
New Bedford Captains Wives Scrimshaw Fossil Ivory Pendant after the most popular of these old pieces. It can be set in either 14KT Solid Yellow Gold or Sterling Silver. An oval piece of fossil ivory, fully bezeled, is held by four long curls of Sterling Silver (or 14KT Solid Yellow Gold). The curls signified the ocean waves that separated the family. All is topped by a lone sphere. 1 1/4 inches high, 1 1/8 inch wide. This is a truly American nautical favorite. Choose your own scrimshaw design from the options below. Shown in Sterling Silver with Fossil Mammoth Ivory - Light, and etched with a three-masted gaff-rigged schooner.
Sterling Silver - Complete with Sterling Silver chain
14KT Yellow Gold - Complete with gold-filled chain.
