"Learning too soon our limitations, we never learn our powers."
Tha Haida inhabit the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia. Either gender could be a Shaman, although women Shaman focused on curing illnesses and the difficulties of childbirth and, in rare cases, on power over animals and fish. John R. Swanton found that
"A Shaman was one who had power from some supernatural being (sga'na) who "possessed" him, or who chose him as the medium through which to make his existence felt in the world of men... For the time he was the supernatural being himself. So the Shaman must dress as the spirit directed him, and, when the spirit was present, spoke in the latter's own language . . . The calling of a shaman was generally hereditary in his family...Before he died he revealed his spirits to his successor..." Our Haida Talisman II is designed after a very interesting artifact found in a site dated to 2500 years ago. It was a simple piece of Argillite carved and worn to represent the moon and the three stars that make up Orion's Belt in the night sky.
Our Haida Talisman II contains a piece of Fossil Walrus ivory naturally marked with darker patches to look like the surface of the moon. Under it was placed three Sterling Silver spheres to represent the three stars in Orion's Belt. It has a full Sterling Silver back (matte finished), and a full bezel. When you wear it, you will feel as though a powerful part of the night sky is watching over you. 5/8 inch high, 7/8 inch wide.
Complete with split Sterling Silver chain.
