Cultures are not simply colorful beads and fringes. Culture is a way of helping people make sense of the world around them. Native languages often have no word for art, for native artifacts were inseparable from their use – Both sacred and everyday objects reflected a very important spiritual dimension.
For example, beads used in earrings and in applique’, and fringes on clothing shimmered when a person walked, recalling for the wearer that the spirit world is always with him/her.
You will find many beads on our earring page - A bead in native cultures is not just a bead, as it is in western culture. Beads are extremely important to native cultures. They were saved for generations and reused over and over again. Ritual drums contained beads, and when a shaman died, his drum was cut open and the beads buried with him. Colored beads protected against evil spirits – That is why they were used in women’s earrings, inlayed in cedar baskets, appliqued on clothing, and on boots. They were inlayed in needle cases and harpoons.
Before the coming of the white man to the arctic regions, Native cultures made their own beads by hand from shells, mammoth ivory, etc. Because beads were so important, arctic cultures were willing to trade furs and skins for them. White men, however, misinterpreted the importance of beads to arctic cultures, and presumed that such beads only had value for their color and decorative value.

The available colors of our high quality Fossilized Ivories are shown below. (Please allow for some color variation in these natural materials.) Our wonderful Ivories have been reclaimed from the ground after sharing the earth for up to 30 millennia! Even after all this time, Fossil Ivory remains warm and sensuous organic ivory; it is not petrified. It has developed its beautiful colors by taking up minerals from the earth and these colors are impossible to match in any contemporary ivories by modern processes. In time, the Fossil Ivories you wear or use will take on very personal hues from your contact. They will become a part of you.
These are our scrimshaw Design Etchings. In addition to these designs, as an added option, you may send us a picture of your choice for a commission price quote.
