Gallery Whaler "Wanderer" Scrimshaw Sperm Whales Tooth

This is a guaranteed real Sperm Whale tooth that is registered with the Department of Commerce as number 21-220-0007. It weighs 127.3 grams.

This is a classically-shaped vertical Sperm Whale's tooth which measures 5 inches around its curve, and 1 3/4 inch wide at its base. On the front is a carefully executed portrait in black ink of the whaler "Wanderer" moving slowly looking for spouts. The back is left unpolished and natural. The whalers roamed all the world's oceans.

"Wanderer" was the last full-rigged ship to sail out of New Bedford. She was wrecked on August 26, 1923 just 13 miles from New Bedford - She was anchored off Hen and Chickens Lightship while the captain was ashore on business. A northerly gale drove her onto Sow and Pigs rocks off Cuttyhunk Island.

This Sperm Whale's tooth is signed by M.M. Cohen.
